A Native American legend holds that once long ago the stars fell from heaven to the bottom of a cold northern lake.God wept and asked the loon for help, the loon being the only creature who could both swim deep under water and fly to the edge of the sky. The loon helped God recover the stars one by one, replacing them as they had been. As a reward God gave the loon a necklace made from stars, which the loon has worn from that day forward.
